{"id":2017,"date":"2014-12-18T12:40:09","date_gmt":"2014-12-18T19:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/?p=2017"},"modified":"2014-12-18T12:40:09","modified_gmt":"2014-12-18T19:40:09","slug":"student-advances-to-spring-bee-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/2014\/12\/student-advances-to-spring-bee-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Advances to Spring &#8216;Bee&#8217; Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Gabriela Gastelum<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Bernadette-Romero-Wins-Pueblo-Bee-2014.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[2017]\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bernadette Romero Wins Pueblo Bee 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Bernadette-Romero-Wins-Pueblo-Bee-2014-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bernadette Romero Wins Pueblo Bee in 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The annual Vocabulary Bee was the buzz earlier this semester, and on Nov. 24, two Pueblo Magnet High School students competed\u2014sophomore Valentino Lugo, and the victor, junior Bernadette Romero.<\/p>\n<p>According to counselor Ms. Teresa Toro, the Academic Scholar Club wants to address the need for the students to use the most frequently used words on the SAT\/ACT in order to help them be more successful for higher college-entrance exam scores and also to increase their diction in all writing assignments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, I lost the Bee,\u201d Romero said, \u201cso I\u2019ve been studying ever since because I really wanted to be the champion this school year. For the past year, I\u2019ve been practicing using all the words in sentences\u2014and I even tried to use these words on a daily basis.\u201d She paused and added, \u201cI felt very successful as the Vocabulary Bee champion this semester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Vocabulary Bee started with great support, but unfortunately, the enthusiasm seemed to wane,\u201d Toro said. \u201cMaybe we can generate more enthusiasm next year because we really want our students to increase their word choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toro said, \u201cThis contest is not a traditional spelling bee. Students are not required to spell the vocabulary word. But, they do have to enunciate the words, know their definitions and be able to utilize the words in sentences.\u201d<br \/>\nShe added that it\u2019s not too early to promote interest for next year\u2019s Vocabulary Bee, and if students are interested in participating, they should find a teacher-mentor who would like to spend time preparing them for the next Vocabulary Bee in the fall of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Romero has been rewarded with a Samsung Galaxy tablet and will have the opportunity to have lunch with her mentor and Pueblo\u2019s principal Dr. Augustine Romero, on Wednesday, Dec. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jesus Ordu\u00f1o, Romero\u2019s teacher mentor, was awarded a tote bag full of school supplies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Gabriela Gastelum The annual Vocabulary Bee was the buzz earlier this semester, and on Nov. 24, two Pueblo Magnet High School students competed\u2014sophomore Valentino Lugo, and the victor, junior Bernadette Romero.
