Beginning this school year, Pueblo High School administrators will honor students who have perfect attendance in an effort to encourage students to be present every day.<\/p>\n

Earlier this school year, in September, 252 Pueblo Warriors earned a certificate because of their perfect attendance. Freshmen led last month\u2019s perfect attendance statistics, according to Assistant Principal Kathryn Gunnels, who created this program in order to stimulate better attendance.<\/p>\n

Gunnels said, \u201cWe want to reward [our students with] good behavior, and perfect attendance is a great start.\u201d She added that they will be awarding students who achieve perfect attendance with certificates each month throughout this school year\u2014and surprising some students with prizes.<\/p>\n

One of those \u201csurprised\u201d students, freshman Juan Romero Ruiz, was very honored by Gunnels.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just doing what I\u2019m supposed to do,\u201d he said. \u201cI come to school every day like all students should.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophomore Jessica Prado, another student who was honored for her perfect attendance, said, \u201cI do face some challenges with the traffic, but I still manage to get to Pueblo. Waking up and getting here are definite challenges, but earning high grades motivates me the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freshman Alyssa Soza echoed Prado.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m committed to high grades,\u201d Soza said, \u201cand that means having perfect attendance so that I don\u2019t miss anything in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gunnels said she hopes seniors\u2014the class with the worst attendance during the first quarter\u2014take their last year of high school seriously, and to \u201ckill\u201d the \u201csenioritis\u201d bug now.<\/p>\n

Teachers, too, have been receiving \u201cPerfect Attendance\u201d certificates\u2014a message from administrators that teachers are definitely appreciated, too, for their commitment to being here every day.<\/p>\n

In October, another 214 Warriors achieved perfect attendance; in November, however, the number of students with perfect attendance dropped drastically\u2014to just 150.<\/p>\n

Gunnels said that she does not speculate why there was a dramatic drop from October to November.<\/p>\n

Learning Support Coordinator Ms. Sarah Barnes, a new employee to Pueblo this school year, distributed these certificates to teachers.<\/p>\n
