For example, thetemperature plunged to 20 degrees, and yearbook\/exceptional education teacher Ms.Marie Little, a chaperone, injured her knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnything can happen on a\ntrip like this,\u201d Somoza said. \u201cThe trails are rigorous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Andrew Romero, who\ndescribes himself as a \u201cfervid member\u201d of the Hiking Club, said, \u201cI love this\nclub because it gives me a chance to be active, and I love traveling. I love\nthe outdoors. I\u2019m not stuck to my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leo Parra, a junior and\nmember of the Hiking Club, said, \u201cThe sights [this school year] have been\nbeautiful, and I\u2019ve made a lot of crazy new friends while making a lot of new\nexperiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of the trips will be\nas extensive as the Grand Canyon, Somoza added. The club plans on small trips\nto Tumamoc Hill and Madera Canyon\u2014about a three-mile hike for each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, new students\nwill have an opportunity to join the Hiking Club with the restart of the \u201cpoint\nsystem\u201d\u2014that is, collecting points from attending meetings, participating in\nthe hiking trips and providing supplies for these trips.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting all over will allow\nstudents to join the club and build their points up to be able to participate\nin the trips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI expect students to\nparticipate in all our monthly meetings and join us on the majority of our\ncamping\/hiking trips,\u201d said Somoza. \u201cI have high expectations for our members\nand expect a certain amount of loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are at least two significant\nhiking and two camping trips left this school year. In December, the club will\nbe venturing to Phoenix and hiking the trails of Camelback Mountain. In March, during\nspring break, the club will be going to White Sands National Monument in\nSouthern New Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Club president Kevin Lopez, a\nsenior, said his experiences during the trips so far this school have been \u201ctherapeutic\u201d\nand were positive bonding experiences. He also said that being outdoors is\nalways a humbling and refreshing feeling. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Somoza, who has been the\nsponsor of this club for the past four years, said that the Hiking Club is a\nlong overdue organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was incredibly involved\u00a0in both high school and college,\u201d he said. \u201cNow, as a teacher, I want students to go outdoors and enjoy the outdoors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Outdoors Adventure Club has\nalready collaborated with Pueblo\u2019s television class (taught by Mr. Michael\nGunnels) to produce a promotion to attract future club members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Somoza said, \u201cWith this\npromotion, students will be able to tell their friends and family this year and\nget even more members involved.\u201d He paused and added, \u201cWe also extended out to\nTucson High to collaborate with them on trips. Our hope is to extend to other\nschools throughout Tucson, including University High School next year\u2014to\nproduce an inner-city Hiking Club.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Somoza wants his students to \u201cunplug\u201d\nand appreciate their surroundings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want students to see and\nhear their memories,\u201d said Somoza, \u201cand to spark their interest for the\noutdoors.
