Pueblo\u2019s College Preparatory Academy<\/a>, co-coordinated with counselor Dr. Teresa Toro, is an open access program, and has been helping many students to prepare for collegiate futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This\nprogram has spiked the interest of over 200 Pueblo students who are active\nmembers; over six years of preparation was necessary to make the academy become\na reality. Students must participate in their selection of 18 AP honors, dual\nenrollment and culturally relevant classes, as well as participate in volunteer\nprograms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis [Academy]\nis something that I’ve wanted to do for a very long time,” said Toro. She\nadded that her efforts would not have come to fruition if it were not for the co-coordination\nwith Assistant Principal Mr. Rafael Monta\u00f1o and Principal Mr. Frank Rosthenhausler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Toro said\nthat the main goal of this program is to help guide students earn as much\nscholarship money as possible by pushing their boundaries and setting high\nexpectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She said, \u201cI\nwant my students to dream big and help expose them to big opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sophomores\nGiselle-Paris Aubrey and David Ca\u00f1ez have big dreams for their futures, and\nthey admitted that they wanted the challenges that the Academy offers students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI want to\ngo to the U of A,\u201d said Aubrey, \u201cand the Academy is going to help me get\nthere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ca\u00f1ez\nsaid, \u201cThe courses [in the Academy] are rigorous, but I\u2019m up for the challenges\nthat the Academy is going to provide me and to prepare me for a great college\nfuture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite\nthe academic benefits, students are willing to work hard and address all of the\nstress that committing to the Academy may cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA lot of students may think that they want to\njoin the academy,\u201d said Ca\u00f1ez, \u201cbut they need to make sure that they can commit\nto its rigorous pace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She added\nthat students who want to be in the Academy are welcome to attend support\ngroups. Tutoring also is available to Academy students before and after school,\neveryday throughout the school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She added\nthat there is support for all students who are taking rigorous classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Toro wants\neverybody to know that the study groups are all year, and held in the Parent\nand Student Caf\u00e9; also, Game Day is on Mondays; walk-in Distress groups are\nheld on Tuesdays after school; and tutoring is every day during \u201czero\u201d hour in\nthe library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI want my\nstudents to feel like they\u2019re part of a family and that we support them in\ntheir post-secondary endeavors,\u201d said Toro.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Daeyalina Moreno and Marla Terminel Pueblo\u2019s College Preparatory Academy, co-coordinated with counselor Dr. Teresa Toro, is an open access program, and has been helping many students to prepare for collegiate futures.
