Students and teachers are much more \u2018chill\u2019 with\none another. In the Philippines, we students were often intimidated by our\neducators.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years ago, Menor\u2019s\nfather moved from the Philippines and landed a math teaching job at St. John\u2019s\nCatholic School, and the rest of the family were reunited two months ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTucson has been great so\nfar,\u201d Menor said. \u201cI\u2019m glad that our family is together at last.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Menor\u2019s mother is trying\nto find a permanent teaching job, and she is currently substitute-teaching. He\nalso has a younger sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to keep\nmyself busy,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m emotionally recovering from a breakup with my\ngirlfriend. The distance killed our relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite feeling \u201clost\u201d\nwithout her, Menor said that life is \u201ca beautiful gift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all have our own\njourneys, and we need to respect them, as well as others,\u201d Menor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, he found out\nthat he has been accepted to an apprenticeship at the University of\nArizona\u2014related to medical ignorance. Dr. Lolita Levine, Pueblo science\nteacher, helped him with the paperwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven though I plan to\nmajor in computer science, I\u2019m going to take full advantage of this\nexperience,\u201d Menor said. \u201cI\u2019m going to be making minimum wage [$12\/hour] for\neight hours each day while learning at the same time. How lucky am I?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the rest of the school year, he hopes to get out of his \u201cslump\u201d and become more social. \u201cI know I need to work on my confidence,\u201d he said. \u201cI need to take advantage of all of the opportunities that are available in this country. I don\u2019t think American [students] know the true meaning of poverty. Go to the Philippines.
