{"id":3251,"date":"2019-11-22T10:57:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T17:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/?p=3251"},"modified":"2019-12-05T11:05:02","modified_gmt":"2019-12-05T18:05:02","slug":"pueblo-students-life-inspires-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/2019\/11\/pueblo-students-life-inspires-film\/","title":{"rendered":"Pueblo Student\u2019s Life Inspires Film"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bill-De-La-Rosa-Pueblo-High-School.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[3251]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bill-De-La-Rosa-Pueblo-High-School-377x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3252\" width=\"150\" height=\"330\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Bill De La Rosa<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By Mariel Ponce<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not every day that a Pueblo High School student is celebrated in a play\/film, but that\u2019s exactly what <em>Bill <\/em>does\u2014recounting the accomplishments and tragedies in the young 25-year-old life of Mr. Bill De La Rosa, a Class of 2012 graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a run as a play in local theaters, <em>Bill<\/em>\nhas been made into a feature film and will premiere at the Fox Theater on\nTuesday, Jan. 14, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe whole thing [my life being turned into a movie]\nis very humbling, and I originally had no idea that my life was being\ncelebrated publicly,\u201d De La Rosa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the film touches on his successes and\ntraumas in life before and since graduating from Pueblo almost eight years ago\nas his class\u2019 valedictorian\u2014including his numerous scholarships totaling more\nthan $500,000. De La Rosa attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and\nOxford University in England, earning two master\u2019s degrees in criminal justice\nand immigration studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"660\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cLSjaBeqEbo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wish I could say I was finished with school, but\nI\u2019m not,\u201d De La Rosa said. He plans to pursue a law degree \u201cback East\u201d next\nsummer, either at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. or Harvard University in\nCambridge, Mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De La Rosa also shared his tragedies in his young\nlife, including the deportation of his mother to Mexico in 2009 when he was a\nsophomore at Pueblo. Two years later in 2011, his father suffered a stroke, and\nDe La Rosa was able to see his mother on a \u201ctemporary humanitarian parole\u201d\nstatus. He saw her again in the summer of 2018 when his father suffered a fatal\nstroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf all goes well, my mother will back in the United\nStates next June [2020],\u201d De La Rosa said, hoping that immigration lawyers will\nexpedite the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, De La Rosa said he is staying in Tucson and\nspending time with his family, including his brother Bobby (a freshman at\nPueblo) and his sister Naomi, who is currently a University of Arizona student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the film, <em>Bill<\/em>, De La Rosa said, \u201cI\u2019m\nstill very humbled that I have inspired a movie about my life.\u201d He paused and\nadded, \u201cI want everybody to know that if I can do it, they can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mariel Ponce It\u2019s not every day that a Pueblo High School student is celebrated in a play\/film, but that\u2019s exactly what Bill does\u2014recounting the accomplishments and tragedies in the young 25-year-old life of Mr. Bill De La Rosa, a Class of 2012 graduate.
