{"id":3295,"date":"2020-02-13T10:31:29","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T17:31:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/?p=3295"},"modified":"2020-02-13T10:31:29","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T17:31:29","slug":"warriors-register-to-vote-in-20-primary-general-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/2020\/02\/warriors-register-to-vote-in-20-primary-general-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Warriors Register To Vote In \u201920 Primary, General Election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By\nDaeyalina Moreno<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"416\" height=\"294\" src=\"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Voter-Registration-Pueblo-2020.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3296\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On\nWednesday, Feb. 12, Pueblo\u2019s CCLC Program hosted a voter registration drive in\norder for young voters to participate in Arizona\u2019s Presidential Preference\nElection next month; the deadline to register for the March 17 election is next\nTuesday, Feb. 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economics\nteacher and CCLC Coordinator\/sponsor Mary Wallace said, \u201cWe partnered with folks\nwho were familiar with the voting process to help us with the drive, including\nMi Familia Vota and the League of Women Voters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\norder for Pueblo students to register for the general election in November,\nthey must be a U.S. citizen, be 18 by November 3 and have no felonies. Warriors\nwho missed this opportunity to register will have another opportunity to\nregister to vote in another drive in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\nimportant to bring a form of identification to register,\u201d Wallace said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many\nWarriors volunteered to make today\u2019s voter registration drive a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\npartnered with [credit recovery teacher] Ms. Christina Benitez,\u201d Wallace said,\n\u201cand without her wonderful help, the process of making the voting drive a\nreality would have been difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benitez\nsaid, \u201cWe feel a sense of accomplishment in being able to generate an interest\nin the political process of voting. Our Pueblo students seemed very happy and pumped\nto have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming presidential election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both\nWallace and Benitez hope that this enthusiasm continues with our young voters,\nand she encourages our students to inspire their parents to vote,\ntoo\u2014especially in the general election (Tuesday, Nov. 3). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"362\" height=\"238\" src=\"https:\/\/pueblowarriors.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/La-Familia-Vota-Tucson.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3297\"\/><figcaption>La Familia Vota: Victor Preciado, Shania Shelby, Samantha Torres &amp; Selina Ramirez.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms.\nSelina Ramirez, the leader of Mi Familia Vota and a fervid member of the group\nfor the past four years, was present at Pueblo\u2019s voter registration drive,\nalong with three other members of MFV: Mr. Victor Preciado, Shania Shelby and\nSamantha Torres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\n[Mi Familia Vota] really want young people to vote,\u201d Torres said. \u201cThe youngest\nage group of voters is and has historically been the least active on election\ndays. We want to change that statistic. We especially want to appeal to\nHispanics, who have the lowest voter participation among all ethnicities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mi\nFamilia Vota visits Pueblo sometimes as often as twice a month, and the group\nhas already registered many students who will be 18 by November. The number of\nregistering students has dwindled a bit due to the high number of students who\nhave already registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStill\u2014every\nnew registered voter means a great deal to us and the political process,\u201d\nTorres said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nadded that she and her co-workers try to reach as many prospective Latino\nvoters to participate\u2014even going door-to-door to educate and inform others to\nvote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe welcome any Pueblo students who are 16 or older to help us spread the word,\u201d Torres said. \u201cStudents can earn $15 per hour, up to five hours per day, by joining our group.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If interested, get in touch with a local Mi Familia Vota office at: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mifamiliavota.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"mifamiliavota.org (opens in a new tab)\">mifamiliavota.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Daeyalina Moreno On Wednesday, Feb. 12, Pueblo\u2019s CCLC Program hosted a voter registration drive in order for young voters to participate in Arizona\u2019s Presidential Preference Election next month; the deadline to register for the March 17 election is next Tuesday, Feb. 18.
