However, that\u2019s not exactly what happened during and after Pueblo\u2019s homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pueblo hosted Arcadia High School from Phoenix, Ariz., and although our guests were a heavy favorite, the Warriors barely missed the opportunity for a victory in the last seconds of the game. In the end, the Bulldogs clenched the win with a score of 12-7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One might think that our victors would show some grace for their win\u2014especially on another team\u2019s field in another city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to our varsity players and our coaches, members on the opposing team showed disgraceful and unfortunate disrespect as well as blatantly unsportsmanlike behavior during and after the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cName-calling and negative comments were already posted by Arcadia High School [on social media] days before the game was played, saying they were going to beat us 49-0,\u201d said Miguel Moreira, a junior. \u201cDespite our loss, we definitely made Arcadia earn that win. However, their name-calling during the game was uncalled for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Warrior football players heard a series of classless names from opposing team members, referring to Pueblo\u2019s players as \u201cSouth Side trash,\u201d \u201ca team of thugs,\u201d and \u201cbeaners.\u201d A few players said that they heard Arcadia football players wishing that our school would have a \u201cboring homecoming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat Arcadia did was very was disrespectful and immature,\u201d said senior Daidryan Mendivil. \u201cTheir behavior was uncalled for. Why couldn\u2019t they just enjoy their win and acknowledge that it was a well-played game for both teams?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe felt really disrespected,\u201d said quarterback Diego Ramirez, a junior. \u201cThe bad sportsmanship after the game got out of hand, and there was no need for all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to observers, Arcadia\u2019s coaches failed to control their team or to show true leadership\u2014as they, too, were part of the unsportsmanlike behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was really shocked that [Arcadia] coaches were laughing at their players mocking us,\u201d said senior George Molina, who is an \u201cunofficial\u201d manager of the team and a formidable mentor to many of the Pueblo\u2019s football players. \u201cI thought that coaches were supposed to be positive role models for their team members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pueblo\u2019s head coach, Mr. Jake Allen, was glad the tensions did not escalate to the point where things got physical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThings got a little out of hands, for sure,\u201d said Allen. \u201cThe way Arcadia behaved created a pretty intense and uncomfortable environment for us, but we managed to keep our cool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pueblo\u2019s cheerleaders were also verbally harassed by some of Arcadia\u2019s players, as many of the cheerleaders had to endure \u201cunpleasant\u201d comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those cheerleaders, junior Karolina Carrillo, said, \u201cAt the end of game, I heard some of the Arcadia players calling us \u2018sluts\u2019, and they kept bothering us. I had to ask [security monitor Ms.] Nellie [Rivera] to walk with me so that I felt safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pueblo High School Principal Mr. Frank Rosthenhausler said, \u201cEverything begins with leadership, and it\u2019s clear that the Arcadia High School coaches failed to show this to their players.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He paused and said, \u201cI\u2019m proud of our football team and how they handled themselve<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Victoria Cazares When one thinks of the word \u201csportsmanship\u201d, one generally thinks of playing fairly and losing with grace and winning with dignity.
