<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nThe Grammy-winning, fifth generation, and world-famous Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez, visited Tucson on Dec. 15, for their annual \u201cMerry-Achi Christmas Show\u201d at the Fox Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has been four years since Mariachi Aztl\u00e1n de Pueblo High School was invited to perform alongside the professional mariachi group, and PHS Mariachi director Mr. John Contreras described the very special feelings he experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI know Jose Hernandez\u2019 [the musical director\u2019s] expectations as a musician that has grown up listening and learning from him and knew that we had our work cut out for us to be able to impress him and the members of Sol de Mexico,\u201d said Contreras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In preparation, Mariachi Aztl\u00e1n learned three of the mariachi\u2019s arranged pieces, including the well-known Christmas carol, \u201cHave Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clarissa Salinas, a senior violinist, said, \u201cPerforming was definitely exciting, but as the day arrived, the nerves really kicked in. Nonetheless, it was an honor to play with them and experience the concert live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everybody interviewed for this story felt thrilled to be playing alongside their favorite professional mariachi ensemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Armon\u00eda section leader Jorge Ramirez expressed how he felt playing the final pieces to conclude the show, including \u201cEl Son de la Negra\u201d and \u201cViva M\u00e9xico.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe faces of the audience reminded me of why I love being a mariachi,\u201d he said. \u201cEven with these songs being mariachi standards, there\u2019s such a difference when they are performed by professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
