Girls Tennis Reaches Final 32

Two weekends ago, the girls tennis team competed in the first and second rounds of the Division 2 State Tournament in Phoenix.  The doubles team of Cynthia Lona and Carolina Felix unfortunately lost in the first round, but played a great match.  Isabel Morales also played well and won her first round match and then fell to the #6 seed on the second day.

This past weekend, 3 members of the girls’ tennis team made it to the third round in Phoenix. Singles player Estefana Hernandez and Doubles team Dulce Corte and Yanseli Alameda won their first and second round matches.  In the third round this last Saturday, they unfortunately lost two tough matches.

State finalists Dulce, Estefana & Yanseli

However, these three ladies finished in the top 32 players in the state (Division 2).  They played very well throughout the tournament and made it farther in the state competition than any player in recent years.

Coach Sarah Wilson (JV) and Coach Tara Bulleigh (Varsity) are incredibly proud of these girls as they have watched them grow as athletes and students since they were freshmen.

Congratulations to them for their efforts.

Coach Gary Crane Retires From Warrior Basketball

Pueblo’s athletic department is sad to announce the retirement of  Gary Crane as head basketball coach.  After 35 years of loyal service to his alma mater, Coach Crane has decided to move on to another chapter in his life.

In his own words:

Friends & Family:

This past Monday (Feb. 28), after much deliberation I decided to resign my position as varsity boy’s basketball coach, thus, severing the last string that attached me to Pueblo High School. For thirty-five years, Pueblo High School was the center of my entire professional life. While the decision was and still remains very difficult, I believe it was simply time for me to take the next step in my life. I would like to be available to help shapes the lives of some other children, my grandchildren. First and foremost, I want to spend more time with my loving wife who has without reservation given up her summers and holidays to support me throughout this endeavor.

Sincerely,
Gary Crane

New Football & Practice Field Grass Project

Pueblo’s football & practice fields will be getting new grass.  A state of the art sprinkler system covering both fields to be compatible with reclaimed water are also being installed. The project officially starts today and will be completed in the Spring of 2011.

Southwest Enviroscapes Inc. started digging for soil samples to determine what type of fertilizer will be used on new field. Heavy machinery will be used to scrape the old grass to make room for the new one.

Football Field is all done! Looks great!

The foreman that will be overseeing the project is Reyes Contreras, a Pueblo graduate from the class of 1979.

Our athletes will sure welcome the new grass on both fields.  Football field will be done first to be ready for track season & graduation.  The practice fields will be done after the spring sports season.

Ruben Canastillo Breaks Football Record

During the football game versus the Cholla Chargers, senior Ruben Canastillo broke the record for longest interception return for a touchdown.  Ruben intercepted a pass on the 2 yard line and took it 98 yards for the score.

The previous record was held by Charles Quihuis (Bowerman) 1971 & Robert Greene (Bowerman) 1975 both for 90 yards.

Here’s the video:

Ruben was very excited to find he had broken the record.  “I just read the quarterbacks eyes and broke on the play,” he said.  He received a plaque and his name will be added to the football record books.

Congratulations to Ruben!  The question is, how long will this record stand?
